Hammer Musem at UCLA

From 2015–2020 I led the Hammer Museum’s in-house design team. Situated within the Communications department, the tight-knit creative crew of 3 designers an intern, and a video producer generated a high volume of work across environmental, digital, and print media. The chief objective of my work and the team was to oversee the implementation and development of museum’s brand and graphic identity by providing unique creative and visual solutions that effectively positioned the Hammer as a world-class institution and vital cultural center in the heart of Los Angeles.

The in-house team created all advertising, exhibition identities and didactics; print and digital communications for the museum. The page features a selection of work from my time as the lead designer.

Made in L.A.

Made in L.A. is the Hammer Museum’s acclaimed biennial exhibition, highlighting artists living and working in the Los Angeles region. I designed the identities for the 2016 and 2018 editions. As part of the branding process, we selected an artist’s work as the key image to best represent the overall ethos of the show. In 2016, it was a found painting unearthed during the Luxor hotel renovations, reappropriated by artist Daniel Small for his installation Excavation II. The 2018 edition featured a still from Neha Choksi’s video 'The Weather Inside Me,' depicting a hand holding a burning photo of a sunset.

The exhibition identities, updated for each new edition, extended across a broad range of applications, encompassing advertisements, marketing materials, branding for films, merchandise, and 4-color screen-printed posters. These posters were shared with exhibiting artists and made available for sale in the Hammer Store.

Radical Women:
Latin American Art, 1960–1985

The Hammer Museum’s contribution to the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time in 2017 showcased the work of 120 women artists and collectives active in Latin America and the United States during a pivotal period in Latin American history and the development of contemporary art.

Inspired by the catalogue, the exhibition's visual identity extended to marketing, communications, exhibition design, and large-scale graphics throughout the installation. Images by Marie Orensanz, Liliana Porter, and Sylvia Palacios Whitman were utilized to promote the exhibition.

Programs & Concerts

The Hammer Museum is renowned for its free public programs, ranging from in-depth discussions on current events to concerts featuring classical music, jazz, and an annual summer courtyard party. The images above showcase designs from concert series. Deliverables included screen-printed posters, digital animations for social channels, event projections, gobo slides, merchandise, and fun kitschy giveaways like temporary tattoos.
